- The Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 precipitated a review by EVML of the cladding materials utilised at East Village. The initial investigation took the form of desk top studies and concentrated on identifying the presence of the ACM cladding which had been implicated as a primary cause of the rapid spread of the fire at Grenfell. The buildings at East Village were, for the most part, clad in masonry, including brick and pre-cast concrete, but ACM material was soon found to have been used in limited locations on eight buildings in Plots N02 and N07 but not in Plot N26. The design and implementation of a remedial scheme to remove this ACM cladding was EVML’s first priority and removal was completed by January 2021, but it soon appreciated that there were more widespread problems. The earliest issue to be suspected at Plot N26 related to compartmentation which was reported to the board as being under investigation in May 2018.
